Downton Abbey Style: The Conservatory
Downton Abbey is the most popular new series around the globe. While English Manor House Style has not been an interior design trend for decades, conservatory garden rooms, typical of estate homes, are popping up thanks to the popularity of period dramas. Carrying on from the design trend for living room comfort on garden terraces, the conservatory is up for reinvention.Season Four of Downton Abbey, Lady Mary (in the blue suit) lunches with a beau in a palm court pavilion.
How do we translate this look into 2014 style?
Trellised walls set the background. The treillage in the Orangerie from Kilruddery House in Ireland is diamond patterned, typical of late 18th- early 19th century. For our updated version, a square trellis makes the shift to modern. We painted 4 x 8 PVC lattice with Farrow&Ball Skimming Stone and attached them to walls painted with Strong White.Palm trees in beautiful planter pots are the next essential element of this design. Our contemporary planters are styled with neutral colours and deco shapes as opposed to the ebullient Victorian urns used in the past.
Lady Mary’s chair is a white Louis XV caned dining chair. Savoia Chair Frames has a wide selection including this caned frame ready for a soft colour such as Farrow&Ball Strong White. Our Louis XV chairs have oyster paint with silver leaf highlights and light taupe linen upholstery (large photo above).
